In the Ayurvedic tradition, Ama is the collective name for all substances that obstruct the physiology of a person and thus interfere with the free flow of the body's internal drainage mechanisms. The literal translation is: Ama means "undigested".
Ayurveda distinguishes three types of Ama: undigested food, externally absorbed toxins and mental Ama. Most of the Ama we produce ourselves when our Agni (digestive power, digestive fire) is not strong enough. As a result, nutrients are not absorbed sufficiently. Over time, this "waste" can accumulate in the body and slow down the free transfer of matter and energy.
The phrase 'Ama' is used repeatedly in Ayurvedic scriptures. The word translated into Ama is: undigested. According to Ayurvedic scriptures, Ama occurs when we do not properly digest the food we eat due to bad eating habits or weak Agni (= digestive fire). According to Ayurvedic knowledge, Ama is described as a certain slag substance in the body that can slow down any metabolic process. There is still no equivalent term in Western science for Ama, which we have translated as 'metabolic waste'.
